BlackBerry 10: Send your location through BBM

Before cell phones, if you broke down on the side of the road, there wasn’t much you could do to get in touch with friends or family. Today if you have a BlackBerry, you can easily send a signal through BBM that will show someone exactly where you are on a map.

This feature may not work on all BlackBerry phones, and you must have BBM messaging set up for it to work. The feature is called Glympse, and in the new BlackBerry10 software, it can stay connected with the other person for a set time, allowing them to track your movements as well, which is a great way to show someone how far away you are from your destination.

Open BBM on your BlackBerry and open the chat window for the person you would like to send your location to. Press the paperclip icon to access the attachment options and select the Glympse icon, which is a G with the top part converted to an arrow, and the Glympse tab will open.

You should now see a timer which allows you set how long the other person will be able to track your location. To change the time, simply move the round slider back or forward to increase or decrease the time in 5 minute increments. Next, click the send button and the other person will receive a link through BBM.

When the other person presses the link, a map will open showing your location and will be able to see your progress as you travel to your destination. The other person can follow the same steps in return, or simply press the Glympse reply button on their screen to share their location with you as well.

When the other person shares their link with you, you will actually be able to two markers on the map indicating your location as well as theirs. If you want to cancel a Glympse, go to the BBM chat and press the message displaying the remaining time. This will let you edit the time, or cancel it by setting the timer to zero, then pressing the update button.
