Tip 187 – Quickly Drag and Drop to Move Rows or Columns in Excel

To quickly move one or more rows or columns, first select the rows or columns to move by dragging over their row numbers or column letters. Hold your mouse over the edge of the selection until you see the 4 way arrow cursor. Hold Shift on the keyboard as you drag the selection into its new location. When you let go the mouse button space opens up for the rows or columns to be inserted between the existing rows or columns.
